Shelves in the pantry doors, small straight canning jars with screw lids, sorted by baking, every day need such as salts/peppers, other door savory by color
I have them in a cabinet adjacent to the stove, built the shelves in no time, Stadium Seating style so they are all visible at a glance and in alphabetical order.
I just group by spice or herb for frequently used ones. I keep those not used on a regular basis one shelf up.

On a related note...I know spices have a limited life span and should be replaced periodically. I just use them until they're gone. Does that make me a horrible person?

Why do you ask that?
The answer of course is no.
It might, however, cause you to produce mediocre meals.
When my spices/herbs start to lose flavor, I just use more of them. And make a note to buy fresh.
There's a lot of our herbs and spices growing outside (this is Hawaii, things grow around here) so we don't have to store them, but more than likely most folks won't have that option. But a few herbs in pots on the windowsill may help keep your herbs fresh?
The health food stores here also have a large selection of 'bulk' spices and herbs which are much less expensive than the ones sold at grocery stores in small jars. I already have small jars so about once a year or so, I'll dump them out and refill all the jars. They used to live on a rack by the stove, but since we've moved to this new (well, not really 'new', but new to us) house the spices seem to have become cabinet dwellers. On the rack by the stove they were in alphabetical order, now they're kinda in a corner on a shelf. Not as handy but they do seem to sort themselves to the most used ones in front.

LOL.
I use mine until they seem like they have lost freshness. Then I'll throw them out and buy new. But I don't regularly check them or anything. You are in good company.
