I seem to recall that line from some horror movie or other; maybe Amityville?

What would cause there to suddenly be a million flies in my house all at once? I've killed more in that last two days than in the entire previous year. No windows or doors open (constant a/c).

Hope the answer isn't too scary.

Flies only emerge after being hatched in dead things.

Yeah, something is dead. Sorry.

It was also a very mild winter...
A lot of adult flys survived the winter- which makes more flys.

I just happen to have had a conversation about that with a neighbor- there is definitely an over abundance of them this year.

Could it be old food (meat) in the garbage? I keep it in the basement stairwell since we have raccoons and possums who ransack garbage cans; so many pests... It's also been hella hot here, if that makes any difference. I wouldn't like to think there isn't anything ELSE "dead" in the house.

That would be a distinct possibility.

But I've done that for five years and am just in the past two days having this problem.

I have to go with "there's something dead". Could just be a mouse (I had a possum die behind a shrub a couple years ago. My God that thing stunk and took me a couple hours to find it. It probably got whacked by a car and crawled in).

It's been hella hot the past two days too. But you can still look for something dead as well.

Every few years we get fly swarms in the spring. I think they are cluster flies. They are slow and stupid and don’t behave like house flies, but boy is it gross having swarms of them bumbling around the kitchen when you’re trying to cook. They’re not related to dead things. It lasts about a week or ten days. I use fly strips to catch them. Don’t want to use poison.

No; these are house flied (unfortunately). I'll try the fly paper, as I also don't want to use sprays or poisons because of my pet; thanks for the tip.
