WE live in Connecticut. We have a house built in 1860. There is a chimney and gas furnace. It may have had a wood burning fireplace at one point, we are not sure. WE are thinking of installing a gas fireplace in the center of the house (that is away from all exterior walls), probably against a wall abutting the chimney. How would we vent vent the exhaust from the fireplace? Would it normally be vented into the chimney? Would it be easy to punch through the existing chimney if it had been sealed up when the old fireplace was removed? I don't like the idea of a ventless gass fireplace. Thanks!

Get a Franklin stove in a corner. Vent it thru a wall to the outside. You want HEAT, don't ya? Well, this'll git er done. A coupla cords of hardwood, and a half cord of pine (to get it started.) And then oak to keep it going, good & hot. You can also broast chickens and make hot tea!

Do you plan to do it for the heat or for an ambience?
You need to figure out where your gas furnace vents.
Newer furnaces are venting directly- through the 3" wall pipe most likely.
Older ones used to vent through a metal liner in the brick chimneys.
While at it- check what type of water heater do you have- gas and older could be vented through similar but separate liner in a brick chimney.
In general, each gas heater, furnace has to have a separate its own liner if vented through a brick chimney- according to a code.
If you want your fireplace for heat- look into a heater, not a fireplace- Rinnai- it is mounted on an exterior wall and direct vented through 3" pipe, fresh air for a burner comes from that too. (they come in different sizes and BTU as well as NG or propane). They are not bad looking.
You dont want an unvented appliance in your house, not healthy.
Look not for "vent free", but for "direct vent" fireplace
If your brick chimney has no vented appliances -like your gas furnace or gas water heater- then you can install a stainless steel liner in it for your gas fireplace - if this is your prefered location.
Otherwise- direct venting fireplace/heater is simpler (and cheaper) -could be placed on any exterior wall and vent through a narrow plastic pipe if you prefer the heat as well as ambiance.
read the manual before buying - especially the installation requirements-ieach manufacture could have different installation requirements

Yeah and a huge mess to deal with as well. My BF put one in a few years back and we finally decided we were done with the awful mess and the smell. Just put in nice direct vent fireplace - SO much better.
