My first floor layout is like this.
  • Top left dining room that I turned into an office. Carpet.
  • Right of that is a kitchen with hardwood.
  • Right of kitchen opens into the living room which is carpet.
  • South of the dining room/office is my family room which is carpet and then right of the is the entrance/hallway/half bath which is hardwood .

I need need new hardwood, but still like carpeting in bedrooms and living rooms. That leaves the office and family room. I’m thinking the office/dining room needs hardwood added for sure. What about the family room? Would it look weird to have that carpeted with hardwood to the north and east of it? I’m guessing most of you will say make everything hardwood. I just love the softness and warmth of carpeting.

FYI all of the upstairs is carpet.

I have hardwood in my living, dining and hall. Bedrooms are carpet and will always be carpet.

Hardwood everywhere. Area rugs for places you like carpet.

Makes the floors uniform with no transitions.

My goal is hardwood everywhere except the kitchen, bath, and laundry. Carpet attracts dirt and allergens, is difficult to clean. and needs replacing every few years. Hardwood will last 50.

I would do all hardwood. We have all hardwood except for bedrooms (carpet) and bathrooms/wet areas (laundry room and kitchen) which are tile. I like this set up and prefer tile in kitchens from a practicality standpoint. But since yours is already wood, I'd just keep that the way it is.
