Our neighborhood pool has a concrete pool deck that is comprised of sections with metal strips in the seams. The neighborhood was built in 2004. The metal strips are rusted and disintegrating. Do they still serve any purpose? If we pull the disintegrating sections out, does that need to be replaced with some kind of caulking or is it okay, as is? The problem is that we are starting to get sharp edges sticking up where someone could injure their feet if they step on them.
Years ago these metal concrete pour stops/construction joint material was widely used for a bunch of years and this is most likely what is causing the rust that is visible.
It will not be possible to remove them completely so your best option would be to grind the joint area with a hand grinder to a depth of 3/4 of an inch deep and then use a backer rod and a good self leveling caulk to properly fill the joints.
Thanks for the info! Would this be a job for a concrete company or some other trade?
Any tradesman who understands and is familiar with caulking since all of the joints will be exposed.
