Does anyone have a manual (push) lawn mower? Is it fairly easy to use for a smallish backyard? I'd appreciate hearing your experiences.

I have a Honda mower, but it is a self-propelled model. I would not have anything else. My yard really isn't so big that I need a riding mower.

It's not pushing the machine that's hard, it's pushing it through the grass that's a bear. Had a push mower for years. Would never get another one, even for a small yard.

Try finding a used mower on Craigslist. People who are moving tend to not want to try and take their mowers with them.

I used this one for many years and was quite happy with it. It takes a little effort to push through tall grass, but it's not like the old ones. It makes a beautiful cut and I loved not needing to keep any gas or oil around or use extra electricity to charge it. I used to mow my small lawn twice a week to keep it looking pristine and keep the pushing easy. It took about 5 minutes to mow 400 square feet. The edging and sweeping took longer and was more effort.

I had a tall fescue lawn which this mower copes with easily. If you have bermuda or crabgrass or some other thick spongy grass, this mower will not work.

I gave my old mower away when I moved and when I went to buy another, found there was no stock anywhere. SO I bought one of these which is similar and does an equivalent job. I still wish I had my Mascot back though.

OP, you need to be more clear.

Are you talking about a gasoline powered rotary mower without self-propelled capability, or a reel mower that has no motor whatsoever?

The former is what everyone used for their lawns until about 1975 and is perfectly usable for most small and level yards. the latter has issues with certain kind of grass like San Augustine, and especially if you don't keep to a regular mowing schedule. I suspect there are some really cheap crummy ones being imported from the Far East that don't work well at all, too.

I use a push mower (reel, no motor) with no problems for my small yard.

We had a push mower for a small yard. It worked great and not hard to push at all. It was cheaper than the self-propelled and since our yard was super small it was no big deal.

However, after my horses all passed away I decided that I wanted the pasture to be a giant park. It was surrounded by mature trees so why not. I used that push mower for a year before I bought a riding lawn mower! Only took me 45 mins. and it was still easy to push.

We had a troy-built push mower. We liked it so much that we bought their riding lawn mower too. I was sad to not have to mow that pasture anymore when we decided to move, but the desert has it's advantages!

Can everyone define what a (their) "small" yard is? Are we talking 500 sq. ft.? 1,000? 2,000?

I have an ego non self propelled. My yard is not small. It is hard when it is super hot out, but typically it is not unbearable. I think my mowing area is about 6-7k sq feet.
