If it is your property, next time you see them doing it just say something like “I am thinking the previous owners didn’t mind you passing through but I need you to stop using my property as a cut through. Thanks so much for understanding!” If they don’t comply then escalate.
Buy a cheap metal trellis at home depot and stick it in the ground in the pathway to block entry. That should send a signal to stop walking on to your property.

yea....or a gate...as long as the OP is certain it is his property.
A person shouldn't have to put up a gate for this.
Having said the above: the first thing I thought was "Is the driveway part of an alley to the next street?" My mother's house was like that, her "driveway" was actually an alley from the street to another alley that ran behind her lot.
Here where I am now we have quite a few alleys that the adjacent property owner(s) have expanded their yards into. We've not really done anything to make them move except where utilities go down them but they're still technically public rights of way people can walk or even drive down.
I visited my new home today to change the locks and I saw a car pull up and two people walk towards my front door. Of course, I stop because I thought they were coming to speak to me but instead they walked up then turned and walk around my car and continued to walk down the entire length of my driveway to the next street, which is located behind my house.
Essentially, they're using the very narrow path between my home and my next-door neighbor as their personal walkway. They park in front of my house and use my driveway as their shortcut instead of having to walk around the block. It wasn't just the fact that they did it but they saw me watching in complete disbelief and the woman simply smiled and nodded while saying, "We're just going around." I was very confused and speechless.
This is unacceptable! How should I handle this gap. It's too small to plant a tree or shrub. I was planning to put up a fence anyway but it wouldn't close the gap because then it would prevent me from having access to the side and back of my garage. I never dreamed I'd have issues with a neighbor on an entirely different street but here I am. Any ideas?
New York? Hmm...
Maybe a fence with a locked gate. A sign that reads "QUARANTEEN AREA."
A squadron of javalina to patrol your yard would make them city slickers think twice about trespassing.
