This will be going on the front porch of a small ranch home.

If those are the only options, shingles. Exposed wood only looks that good for a year or two unless well maintained. Then it looks shabby.

I like the exposed wood better. It does take maintenance, but I think it looks prettier.

It depends on what it’s going on!
“Ranch home” isn’t very descriptive! A pic of the house you intend to put the porch on would certainly help in the decision process (materials, style, age, etc. make a huge difference). For all anyone knows, neither style may work- and there are certainly many other styles to choose from.

Maybe a “porch” isn’t the right choice- maybe an awning would do.

There could also be the possibility that you can’t put a porch on the house because of the setback back- though a variance may be obtainable.

Here's a pic of the house: Of course, the siding hasn't been installed yet. It will be 5" vinyl lap siding.

I couldn't see a picture. sorry. There could be another alternative. I have a glassed-in porch on the front of my cape-style 50's house. When I had it resided in vinyl, I had lap siding on the house itself, but vinyl shakes installed on the gable portion above the porch. All siding was done in the same cypress green. It provides just a little difference that is interesting and unique. It looks a lot better than just lap siding overall.

Sorry, it wouldn't let me post directly on here since the size of the pic is too big. I am trying to figure another way to do it.

Since I see no foundation, I'll assume that this will be a raised wood porch(?). What is the planned width? Just the door area (about 4' wide); or, do you intend to take it to the left corner of the house?

What color is the siding, trim, and accent (shutters and door)?
What type of foundation plantings are you planning?

note- too bad there's a crawl space vent right under the door- hard to secure ledger AND reduces the amount of ventilation.
