My Craftsman with a Briggs &Stratton engine is using alot of gas. It is new I bought it in Aug. I've used it 5 times. Today the gas tank was full but I ran out of gas just as I was finishing. So I put some more gas in and finished the yard. I do have a large yard, but previous cuts I had gas remaining in the tank. So this is a sudden problem.

I am not smelling a gas leaks and I see no evidence of gas leaking. There seems to be enough oil in it. What could be the cause of this, and how do I remedy the problem? Surely it doesn't need major maintenance after so few cuts.

How long did those previous cuts take compared to this one? If the grass was longer, denser and wetter, mowing it took longer. Running the mower longer uses more gas.

Was the engine running faster the last time, or were you pushing it slower ? Either would eat more gas for same size lawn.

About 40 minutes to cut it. The grass actually was shorter than usual this time. It wasn't wet at all. I did it at 2pm. Nothing was different other than some leaves have started to fall in the back yard. Not piles of them there just starting to fall.

It's a self propelled. I pushed it as it moved itself along at its speed. Nothing different there. I was very surprised today when I ran out of gas, doing the exact same lawn I did 12 days ago on much less gas. Could this be something to do with it being a new lawnmower? Such as after a few cuts a lawnmower has a noticeable increase in the use of gas.

Has a kid put marbles in the gas tank? I once bought a used mower like that.

Hmmm, wonder who might have lost some of theirs...

(Note that I said I bought one that had them in the gas tank. Why they were there, or how they got there was no concern of mine. I did, however, like the reduced price.)

Maybe the choke isn't completely opening. Also check sparkplugs. Those made in Mexico can be troublesome.
