I live in a desert community in New Mexico and almost all of the houses are a tan colored stucco or a shade one way or another in earth tones. From a distance, they blend together and resemble the desert colors. I like it. The desert and mountains and the river bosque forest are, taken together, the main thing of beauty along with the far horizon and the bright sky. A lot of people don't get it. Those that live in a white-washed city or town obviously like it or would do otherwise.
But the desert has more than earth tones, haven't you noticed?
In Las Vegas they have Red Rocks park, to the west of the city, which is very popular with locals, and? And if you've ever driven on Pallette Drive in Death Valley, you'll see all kinds of desert colors, even jade.
Yes, I've done a Youtube walking tour of Santorini, and to visit there, it would be a novelty to see, but to live there?
If you've ever studied Chromotherapy, they claim there's colors that can be healing to you, which I can't disagree.
I'm willing to bet, inside these white houses, for compensation, there may be a riot of colors.

Indeed. There is a great amount of color in the desert and it is prominently displayed in many places. The colors at sunset are stunning. The houses are often earth tones. Some of that is derived from the traditional building styles of adobe and stone, widely replicated in modern adaptations with a relatively narrow range of earth tone stucco.
Ha - my house is a sage green and even that stands out against 20 shades of greige...and couple white houses in my subdivision.
Mine too! I actually worried a great deal when picking that color for my siding and asked my former elderly neighbor if she liked it before ordering it. However, I think I started a trend, since one home has since been painted slate blue and a new construction home is done all in barn red (which looks hideous, IMHO).
