This is primarily a heads-up for anyone having cabinet work done. Many of the kits for roller drawer "slides" are metal channels that fit into a plastic socket that anchors them to the back of the cabinet. The metal channels are fine, and the plastic sockets seem perfectly fine at first, but as they age they become unable to handle the stress and fail and break. The time until failure varies, but they WILL fail eventually.
At first, I thought the problems with mine were just from a bad batch from one manufacturer, but I've just run across the same issue in a different house, with a different type of plastic socket from a different era.
My advice if you are having cabinet work done is to specify in the contract that NO plastic be allowed in slide hardware other than the wheels - and then open up and inspect upon delivery or installation. Getting on hands and knees, clearing out stored items, and then trying to reach in and replace or repair is no fun, especially as you get older.
As an aside, this experience also has me thinking about all the 3D printed plastic parts that will fail over time.
Ooh, I bought a faucet made in Chiner and some part of the cartridge failed almost immediately. They sent a replacement piece and that failed, too. As I remember, it was plastic instead of ceramic.
If having "cabinet work done" equates to "custom built" cabinets...you should be fine. If you are buying from big box stores or assembling yourself (RTA) from an internet purchase, then expect plastic and flimsy metal slides. Any custom cabinet maker worth a d@mn will use ball bearing, soft close drawer slides...his/her reputation and future business depends on using quality construction methods/materials.
