Oscar is a robotic vacuum that lives in the upstairs of our house. He is automatically sent out to vacuum it twice a day. Today when I went to empty his dirty chamber I found (amidst the cat hair, dust, cat litter) hundreds of teeny, tiny little black bugs crawling amongst the refuse. It would seem Oscar sucked up a fresh hatching of these loathsome creatures.

What is a good product to spread around a carpeted area to continuously kill these wretched things? But first, let me introduce you to Oscar.

I use Ortho Home Defense about twice a year- it seems to do the job quite well.

The pests are likely black carpet beetles. Beetlejuice! That can work on some infestations. Make sure that it doesn't have pyrethrums if you have cats. The simpler and safer solution is to use a stiff broom to brush either boric acid dust or diatomaceous earth down to the backing. Both will kill, and surface vacuuming won't remove all of it.

Do these awful creatures bite? The beetles, that is. My cats are so loaded with flea and tick killer products I'm getting afraid for their health.

Well I guess they weren't those beetles. Those things bit up my feet something awful.

They might be fleas. Fleas exist in many environments. There are plenty of hosts in nature other than your cats. If your cats aren't "available" because of their meds, they're going to try to get a meal from you!

Diatomaceous earth. Use food grade. Sprinkle on carpets - let it sit for a day or two and then let Oscar suck away!
