Anytime CC information is entered other than being tapped or swiped vendor needs three things; account number, expiration date and now yes; CVV number.
Whether you fill out an online CC authorization form, make a "payment online" or give information over telephone (in which case someone else is filling out an online form), it's all same.
What you should never give out is security code on back of CC. Only CC will ask for that information as part of vetting process when a card holder reaches out for customer service.
If anyone ever calls, texts, or otherwise contacts you and asks for CC security number do *NOT* give it out. Respond will contact CC company yourself directly.
You'd be surprise at how many do not follow above advice and proceed to rattle off every bit of information requested by some random text, phone call or whatever. In short order next thing is fraudulent charges racked up on said card.
People should also be very careful of when waiters, gas station attendants or anyone else takes their CC and goes somewhere out of sight to process transaction. While out of your sight they can copy down credit card security code which along with other account information skimmed off card can be used for fraud.

I googled CVV and the security code because I was confused about which is which. They are the same number according to google.

On some card yes, the CVV number is same as security. OTOH some cards have two separate set of numbers.
My AMEX Gold card has a four digit number on front which is asked for say when making purchase online or whatever. There is also a different three digit number on back which no one outside of Amex has ever asked me to provide.

My credit cards don't have this extra security number that you've warned people strongly not to give out when making a purchase. I think your post is extremely confusing, especially in a thread where the OP refused to give out her CVV number.
We are trying to convince her that it is normal to give out the CVV number.
