When we bought our house, it had a small bathroom with just about enough room for one of those Aluminum-framed triangular-shaped glass shower installations that I guess one buys in a piece.

I would like to take it out but wonder if there's enough room to put a regular shower in. Can they use the existing drain, create some kind of tile water barrier on the floor, and then attach heavy glass plates to the wall to make a custom-sized shower? Or are there size limitations? The water supply pipe comes out of the wall quite high so I don't think it would be a problem.

I would like not to have to change anything else in there since I'm hoping to save $$.

Size of showers are NOT limited- but I can tell you that one of those pre-fab showers (36”) is rather small for an average sized person!

Where size is limited- The space for the toilet (both sideways and in front), and the walk path through the bathroom. A drain can most likely stay in-place as you suggest (unless it interferes with the other dimensions I lamented too); but the floor has to have a slight pitch from all sides so water will be directed toward that drain.

Enclosures can, and have been, all glass. A nice modern touch- no tiled walls, curbs, etc. But, the floor(s) that the glass will be sitting on needs to be pretty damn flat so there won’t be leaks. As for the plumbing fixtures- there are standard dimensions for placement/height. If they are currently not to standards- dropping down the valve(s) is a minor job- compared to the overall job.

Nothing about this will be “inexpensive”- so, not really sure where you’re going to “save” money.

Eliminate the shower enclosure altogether.
(Hire a plumber to adjust the pipes to) install a FLOOR drain and probably a curb at the door.
Seal and finish (RedGard & Epoxy get it done) all the exposed surfaces.

This allows the entire room to be one big shower pan with LOT's of elbow room.
