Home depot now only has red color PT wood, as opposed to the green color that existed for so many years. What is the difference, or are they the same? Is one better than the other?

They are not the same. Green = arsenate. Red = no arsenate

Yes, they are the same.
The only difference is a dye that has been added to the chemical process- giving a finished deck a stained appearance.

Arsenic treatment/CCA (the old dark green looking PT) has been banded for years now. "ACQ" is the most common treatment used today (has a bright yellow/golden hue to it).

The important thing to do is to read the attached tag and the grade stamp- the two will give you all the info you need. The one most common difference with PT is "ground contact"/"not suitable for ground contact".

What is “arsenate”? Do you mean arsenic? If so, it’s been banned since about 2002.

Arsenic, arsenate. Essentially the same thing for this discussion. And actually chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is still used - but not for decks and playgrounds. Today, wood treated with CCA is used for commercial, industrial, and some agricultural purposes. It may still be used in residential construction as shingles, shakes, and foundations.

I found that PT red was widely used on the west coast, I have never seen it outside of that area.
