Yes, that WILL work. No need to remove the old cartridge.
.
Depends on the brand. At least one won't reset until you replace it with AN APPROVED (their brand) filter. There is a microchip in the filter that keeps track of usage and after it hits some magic count tells the fridge that is is dead. Once it is dead the icemaker stops working.
I didn't replace mine and eventually the filter became clogged and no water would flow through it. I replaced it and the water and ice began working again.
If your refrigerator doesn’t include a reminder then check the suggested change time for the filter for your refrigerator and use your smart phone to set a reminder or go old school and put a reminder on a print calendar.

Hmmm, glad that my Kenmore Elite is not like that.
My in door ice maker has been acting up so I placed a service call. The tech said the problem was the water filter. He asked when I last replaced it. I said years ago. Service call cost me $75 but I am happy to know the problem, I ordered a new filter on Amazon.
Word to the wise. Do not forget to replace the water filter. Generic ones cost about $20.00.
I get them online also, but I admit that I go a year on each one, instead of 6 months.
