I know stainless appliances are all the rage right now, but I do not like the look of them at all. They look too industrial to me and I prefer the look of black applicnaces. We are building a house in 2 years and all these design shows say stainless will go out of style but will it really? We don't plan on moving out of our new house, but you never know what can happen in life so I want to make good re-sale decisions just in case.
I can't stand the stainless look either -- they're cold, and very hard to clean. NOR do I like granite countertops. When we had Formica countertops, we could drop something and it might not break -- AND you could see where any spills and stuck food were. With granite, EVERYTHING breaks, and you can't see anything but fossils and rocks on the surface!
About fads, if you look on the JC Penny or Sears or Lowe's websites, you'll see that appliances come in white, almond, black, stainless -- just about anything you could want. And there are also panels that you can place on the fronts in whatever color you want. So, don't despair -- you can live the life you enjoy!
I agree about the 'industrial' look; good description.
We just remodeled our kitchen this year (moved it into a bigger room) and the salesman went on and on about how wonderful and stylish stainless steel was. I said I didn't want to look as if I'd burglarised a local restaurant, and he shut up.
McDonald's has stainless steel appliances. I chose black. We live in deep country, so we have a farmhouse kitchen, old oak and wrought iron and stone.
allforcats, thanks for that reminder about granite. I went back and forth about that for a while, loving the granite but remembering I'd heard something about it LOL...and I think that's just it, what you described. We've got natural wood worktops, and stone-look composite-something-or-other that's worked out fine.
One of my closest friends hates stainless. However, I love it and first bought stainless in the early 90s, b/f it was a "trend." I have no problem keeping mine shining . . . (just use lemon oil!) and I think it is beautiful and clean looking - sanitary, LOL. I love it w/ dark colors and since I prefer dark hardwoods, dark granite and cherry cabinets - the stainless steel looks very sleek and upscale.
But no - you are not the only person who doesn't want stainless. My friend could afford whatever she wanted and instead chose black. However, I gotta tell ya- every time I walk into her kitchen, I think she de-valued it by not putting in stainless. You gotta do what you like, tho - and if you hate it or feel it is too high maintenance - not worth being miserable in your own house.
I hate stainless, period. Very hard material to work with compared to mild steel; harder to weld, harder to work and bend and can't be cut with an acetylene torch. And if your'e welding overhead the hot rollers that go down your collar or sleeve take forever to cool down and leave nasty burns so you have to break the arc to deal with the rollers---with mild steel you can shake and dance around while still welding and the hot rollers cool off quickly and die.
So hating the material itself I sure as Hell don't want to see it in my kitchen.

Well if she can afford whatever she wants no doubt she doesn't care if she de-valued her kitchen.
