I just moved into a house that is about 25 years old and I'm almost positive that the running water isn't clean...

I've had the water heater replaced but still no luck...

What are some procedures I should take to test the water and what type of things can I go to fix it once I found out for sure what the problem is..

Thanks,

Ro41

What is the source of the water? Municipal water or private well?

I had this same problem. Go with your gut feeling.

For quite some time I had this in the back of my head to call a plumber....but was afraid of the bill. And I just knew it would come to ripping out all the plumbing under the house and probably in the yard to the county water line....all to find the culprit of my problem.

But I have no money!

So, I started the venture myself. It does not require a permit to find the source of dirty water...so, I took a shovel and started digging. Went to the road, next to it where the water box is and started digging....down, down, down...18 inches to be exact. Found the line. Then dug sideways all the way to my house. ALL THE WAY. Took me a week. That was back breaking work.

Anyways....nothing. No leak, no way dirt or particles was getting in. But the line didn't go to my house...it went to an old well house to the regulator then on to my house.

BINGO it was there it was above ground picking up something. That well hadn't been used since the 60s. And the old valves and stuff were still there on the line even though in the open position.

So, I went to Lowes and got new line and put it on the county pipe, put the regulator on, ran it in the trench I dug to uncover the old piping...under the house ... but I didn't stop there. I purchased new fittings and went ahead and installed new pvc piping under the house.

I have crystal clear water. I can now use my own ice and don't have to buy bagged anymore.

So, somewhere you have a source of contamination....probably very small if you don't have brown/orange/rusty water. Could be a valve getting rusty and may take years to get more noticable.

You've taken care of your hot water...so is it only with your hot water, not cold?

Default What is not clean????

H,mmm I guess a fellow can't wash water with other wash water could he.

The terminology probably got us all a bit baffled.

If you are talking some sort of sediment or rust or scale or something you can see, just run some cold water into a large glass container, let it set and see what is on the bottom.

What type of piping is in the hot / cold water lines?

Can be from the municipal system itself if they are doing maintenance and haven't completely flushed their own lines that well. That only typically lasts for a few days, unless you got a big slug of it in your own lines. Running your own water a bit to flush the lines normally cures it.

Is this clean problem all the time, exactly how do you know you have a problem?

Somehow this reminds me of that problem when your GF sezs I do not "Feel Fresh". Alway with that tone, where you better know exactly what to do and quick.
