Well as you can see - the ball's in your court on this one. Some people use them a lot in Houston and love them and others never use them and consider them useless. To each his own -- this is basically your call.
I think folks who don't have one love the romantic idea of having one. I could not care less about mine and I never use it. Now, if I had one that I could turn on with a button in case I just need to take the chill off, that would be fine.
Wood burning? No way.
I don't know. I think a nice entertainment center with a Plasma would be a nice replacement.
Got that downstairs in the Den, this room is for reading, conversation and music. Nice to have a room we use every day where the TV is not the focus of the space. And yeah, in San Diego were don't need fireplaces, but we fill this piece of architecture in the room with fire often for the ambience, and because its beautiful and thats important to us.
Actually we have a fireplace down there in the Den too, again because the TV never should rule and define a space
It was one of the features that sold me on the house we bought. Whenever I went on a snowboarding trip, all the cabins we rented had a fireplace and I loved the ambiance of having a crackling fire in a main room at night.
I think it all depends where you are. I have always lived where there are some what cold fall/winters. We have had 2 wood burning fireplaces but then we have had gas. I loving have a gas fireplace unless in a warm climate. There is nothing like coming in and flicking on a switch to a nice warm fire.
My DH the Boy Scout would argue otherwise.
No more wood burning for me-sure it looks and smells great but wake up and come into a freezing room!
I live in Michigan and I definitely used my all the time and turned down homes because it did not have the fireplace.
Liek someone said, the furnace will make the upstairs unbearable, so keep the heat down to about 65 and if you are chilled in the family room, just turn on the fireplace for a short while (30 - 40 minutes) and it is toasty warm.
