Why are my air cond filter turning brown every two weeks
Typically if your filter is filling up too fast, its catching too much, like a HEPA filter. Most people simply use the cheapest filter and it works just fine.
I know this is an old thread, but I know what OP is talking about. We live in a 1989 ranch and change the filter every 3 months, although it doesn't even look dirty. My son has a 4 yr old ranch house nearby, and the air filter is black after only a month.
We have NO CLUE why. He has tenants now, so I don't know if this has remained consistent or whether it has lessened a bit.
My thought would be your sons house is built to tighter specs than a house built in 89. Compare yours to leaving one or two windows open all year round, while your son never opens his at all.

The puzzling thing is, the consistency of the "dust". Ours looks like gray dust. His is black and sooty.
No insult but perhaps you need to clean the house.
DO you live in a really dusty area?
Filters that are on the ceiling collect much less dust than filters that are at floor level. Many places put the filters at floor level near the front door. These collect a lot of dirt fast.
The thing to remember is that that filter is collecting dirt that you would be breathing in if it wasent stuck in the filter.
Hi, I unfortunately have been putting the furnace filter in the wrong way for 2 years, as long as I have been leasing the condo I am living in. I put a filter in the correct way and I checked it 2 weeks later and it is really dirty. I amt using the 3M Filtrete. Can someone help me out with this. Is it harmful to be inhaling all the dust and whatever else?
Location: Finally the house is done and we are in Port St. Lucie!

The filter is catching all the dust so that you aren't inhaling it. Filters that get dirty quickly are usually because the ducts need cleaning out. It's not too expensive to get a company out that will clean all the ductwork for you.
