I have ants on my ceiling. I *think* they are coming in over the top of my front door, though it is very hard to tell since they haven't established a "marching line" yet. In the past they have come in over the threshold of that same door, so I know it is a popular entry point for them.

Normally when I discover ants, I put down a little bit of Terro on some pieces of paper a few times, and eventually they are gone. (Until they re-establish the colony and come back, that is...) But I can't put Terro on the ceiling.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this? I'm trying to kill them outside with Combat gel and Terro (they've set up shop in my home's brick exterior, not too far from the front door) but so far I've not been able to entirely shut them down.

If they are indeed coming in through the front door, how can I seal it to make entry more difficult for them?

If you have been dealing with the problem and have not been able to solve it with your own efforts, get a pro. If they are established in the brick, a professional will be able to treat the source and be the end of it. And they usually have a garentee.
If I saw the ants on the ceiling, then I know they are smarter than me and I would give up.
Get a pro!! It's got to be cheaper than buying useless chemicals and the time and effort spent treating ungrateful ants who seem to be able to beat you.

Well, Terro's like $2 a bottle and a bottle lasts for a year. I don't think an exterminator is cheaper

That said, we have an exterminator coming next week to deal with any and all pest issues. But that doesn't mean I don't want to control the ants before he gets here, too - ants can get bad quick!

What kind of ants are they? I would be concerned that you have a leak somewhere and you have carpenter ants.

If you're using the powder, mix it in a sugar solution (effectively their liquid version).

The way I do it, it's 6 parts sugar, 1 part boric acid powder. Put it in a loosely covered dish (to prevent larger creatures like dogs or cats from eating it) where they're entering, and let them eat it up. First day, there will be a lot of ants eating it up. Second day, there will be quite a few still, but not as many. Third day, there will be few, if any left, as much of it would have been brought back to the colony already and shared (poisoned).

Get some Bengal Gold Roach Spray. It's a dry spray. I cant believe how great this stuff works. I even give it as gifts. (Only in Texas would anyone understand that) I gave a can to my neighbors last year; they reported back to me that, after spraying it in a bathroom, they found hundreds of dead ants -- and they didnt even know they had ants inside.

They're the little tiny brown ones. The ones I've heard people refer to as "sugar ants" or "**** ants," LOL.
