In all likelihood they are sub contractors working for a flooring company. They do not make near as much as you think. The flooring company nickles and dimes their installers, making them pay for the supplies needed to do the job correctly.
They will not be expecting a tip, but they are always appreciated. Like anything else, if you are happy with the job they do feel free to offer a tip.
Having hardwood floor installed today. Wondering if it is customary to tip these guys.
It's not customary but it's always appreciated.I've had customers give my employees anywhere from $20 up to $100,it doesn't happen all the time but when it does I know they really appreciate it.
It will take a few days to find the flaws......I say 100% no, and I would have guessed you were in LV because everyone wants a tip there. You probably paid 9 bucks psf installed, I've see whole house sell for less.
Offer the the restroom, maybe ask if they would like a pizza delivered for lunch. Don't assume they eat things, though. Who knows where they are from......
Also, give them the best place possible to park, even if it is your space--that will start things off right, they have tools....
If I felt that I got a great deal, yes, I'd probably tip.
If I paid $9/sf (I know that was only a hypothetical example - but still).... well - never mind, I would never pay that much to do something we could do ourselves.
I have tipped movers and painters. Did not tip the concrete guys (offered restroom, and cold drinks and lunch from fast food joint) or the electricians (offered nothing other than restroom/water -- they were taking me to the cleaners with their rates!).
But yeah - if they did an awesome job and you feel you didn't pay enough, or that you think you paid a middleman and the actual workers didn't get enough - go for it. As everyone says, its not like it won't be appreciated.
I'm surprised so many actually mentioned "offer them the restroom". Is that not a given? Who would deny someone working in their house the bathroom?
Well, that was awfully nice of you. I probably would not have done that but made sure they had plenty of cold water, lemonade and stuff....oh yea and a bathroom. LOL
I'm sure they were very happy. I hope they did a good job for you.
It looks amazing. And they seemed to work hard. So I was happy to do it. Honestly I have no clue how much these two guys were making, but knowing what I was charged I would be shocked if it was too much.
You'd be suprised how many people do NOT offer workers in their home the restroom. Obviously - not the people on this board. But a lot of times the workers are suprised that we are allowing that and have made plans to drive to fast food for lunch specifically for the purpose of using the rest room while there.
Some people are really uptight I guess.
If you feel they did a great job and were happy with the price you paid - then tipping was a good decision. Congrats on your beautiful new floor!
