hi all - I bought a new build home in Northern Virginia in October 09 and we are using the air conditiong for the first time since it's nearly 90 here right now. I am noticing that the air flow up on the top floor (2nd floor but we have a finished basement as well) is next to nothing and at best, it's lukewarm up there and the rest of the house is quite cool. I have closed all the vents in the finished basement and most on the first floor but I don't see a difference. Is there something else i need to do? I have never had central air in anything but a single story ranch home.
Also, we have three floors of living space but only one thermostat which is in our family room on the main level. Yes it's one of those things we didn't think to check when we bought the house. To make matters worse, the thermostat is in the warmest room of the house, so in the winter the rest of the house is freezing. Is it a real problem to install a thermostat on each floor?
Where I live the problem in two storied homes is cooling. They are multi zoned and often separate cooling units used. You need a professional cooling person to advise now to correct that.I know several people who bought tract home here with so called bonus rooms above the garage and their cheap solution was put in a window unit.
