We keep our dishes and silverware beside and across from the dishwasher, so you don't actually have to move more than one step to put anything away. The dishes are in a lower cabinet so the kids can put them away : )
But, my stove is right there too so it's all close.
Newly married, in my first house I HATED emptying the dishwasher. I didn't realize why until we moved. In the first house the dishes were stored across the room. Now, I literally don't have to take a step to unload the dishwasher. It is much less of a hassle to store them right above the dishwasher, if possible.
On a sort-of-related note, while looking for a new home, I toured one where the current owners used their kitchen pantry to store shoes!
The only thing my dishwasher is used for is a drying rack, so I'm not taking up counter space.
I'm kicking myself after reading your post! My dishwasher broke down (and I knew it was going to cost $$$ to fix, so I let it go for several months). It never occurred to me to use it as a drying rack! Duh me!
