So I have white painted cabinets in the kitchen. They need a new coat. After we paint the new coat, what is a good way to keep the insides looking nice? I really hate cutting contact paper or anything like that. Can I just use some sort of clear coating that will protect the paint? What? The top cupboards are open- no doors. So if I use shelf paper or contact paper, it will show and will have to be more perfect than usual. That's why I'd like to avoid it. But I think putting dishes and things straight on the paint will make the paint not last too long? Ideas or experiences? Thanks.

They have rip-apart rubbery-type liner now.

Yes, in various colors to match whatever you want and different widths. No more paper-anything!

but you still have to cut it to size, esp for the bottom cabinets that are really DEEP. I have some and it looks terrible. Plus it moves. Maybe a different color and a couple dabs of glue, but the stuff is pricey. Are there any other options?

Won't you have to cut anything you use to fit???

If you use a high quality enamel paint it should be very durable and give you a long service life.
You could use clear plastic, but you would have to cut it to fit.

I think I would use a high quality oil base enamel and paint at least two coats on. A gloss finish will wipe down easily should you get it dirty or mark it up.

well I already have the paint and part of why I'm asking this question is I painted some of the shelves already with it (it is "glossy" from sherwin williams), and after something had sat on it for a while, I notice paint had chipped off. So that is mostly what I'm hoping to avoid, in addition to just streaks and the general mess that is in there now pre-repaint.

Yes, I imagine I'd have to cut anything I lined the cabinets with, and I just kinda don't want to do that. I think the open shelving would look weird with some liner, at least it does with what I've got in there right now. I was hoping there was a clear product I could spray/paint over the paint and have it be extra durable, but maybe i'm just making things up.

You can spray the bottom of the shelves with Deft clear lacquer aerosol (blue can). It's very tough & dries clear.

I painted a dresser with satin paint, then did 2 coats of a satin polyurethane just on the top surface, sanding lightly between coats. Looks good and super easy to keep clean. Very practical.
