What premium did you have to pay over a normal electric-powered system, and how long did it take you to recoup the premium, based on lower air conditioning bills?

Default Blast from the past... no pun intended.

I have not heard of anyone getting one of these since the 80's! 'Not to say they don't sell them, they are not common. The old Entex Gas Company used to sell these, they began to become unpopular after Houston had the ammonia accident on 59 in the late 70's, since they work with ammonia (the amonia is boiled by the heat of gas flames).
