I'm sure there are already threads about this but I'm having trouble using the "search" function so I'm just posting a new thread... sorry for any redundancy!

So anyhoo, I was offered a position in Houston and I am going to be visiting soon to start looking for a place to rent and I wanted to get a feel for some of the safer neighborhoods to start looking in. My new job is in the NW corner of the inner loop (I think it's called the Heights?) but I do have a car and don't mind a little commute if necessary (though I just wasn't sure how bad traffic is in the area - I know in some cities I've lived in, what should be a 20 minute drive ends up being an hour plus in traffic which really affects which neighborhood you choose). I'm a single female so safety is one of my bigger concerns and while I do enjoy some nightlife, I'm not 21 and don't need to be surrounded by cheap bars and frat parties The two things I've heard so far is stay away from Sharpstown but Montrose is a decent area. Any other suggestions?

Oh, one last thing... anyone have a suggestion for a website to look for apts? I can find houses/condos to leave on an MLS site but I usually HATE sites like apartments.com because they just list complexes that may or may not have availabilities and usually do a kind of bait&switch on their advertised rents. I know in other cities I used to check those local weekly artsy newspapers for current apartments but I don't know if Houston has any of those or if there is a great website that locals use to find places... any ideas would help

Well, the heights is a nice cozy area, with plenty of rental options. However, ultimately it will depend on your price range because you get what you pay for especially within the inner loop. Also, if you are working inside of the loop, I would definitely advise staying within the inner loop to avoid traffic.

Budget is the vital info you left out.

Well, I had left out budget info originally because when I was doing some searching, it seemed like you could find a wide range within all the different neighborhoods... but I'm generally looking for a 1 bd apt (highrise, midrise, condo lease, house lease, whatever) and my goal budget is between $700-900 but my upper limit is $1000/mo.
