My wife and i purchased a new home in spring and need some advice on where to buy furniture. we prefer a classic look and a affordable price name brands are not neccesary for us but quality is. is there a furniture district or are there any quality independent furniture stores? we do not mind driving for a deal we have to furnish the whole place since we are leaving the majority of our stuff in los angeles any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance for all your help.

I'll break it down into new and used/antique. You may want a mix. For new stuff, check out Chic Warehouse on Yale, Brandon's off of Westpark, and the Star clearance center on 45 north.

For some real bargains, check out the consignment warehouse on 1960, near T.C. Jester behind the Fuddruckers. (tucked back in there). Blue Bird Circle shop on Alabama and the Guild Shop, also in Montrose, which can sometimes have absolutely nothing decent, and sometimes be a treasure trove. If you don't find anything on your first visit, don't give up on it. I also never cease to be amazed at some of the things you can find at the estate sales. You can get top quality things for a song at those. It can be, however, a bit "labor intensive" in sifting through the good and the bad ones. Also there is a consignment shop, if it is still there, at Champion Forest and 1960 that used to be pretty good.

What does everyone think about IKEA - this is the 1st time that I've lived in a city that has an IKEA store - is the quality any good? Are prices competitive?

For anyone looking to buy brand name furniture...

Buy direct from North Carolina and have it shipped to your doorstep. The Mrs. and I did this for our (Broyhill) dining room furniture and we saved almost $2000 versus what we would pay here in PA. We have friends and family all over the Northeast that do this and you save a ton of $$$.

Depends on what you are looking for. Kitchen supplies (everyday dishes and cookware) are usually good values, as can be the lighting. Some furniture is pretty good, some not-so-good. Thankfully you can usually tell get a good sense of the quality in the showroom.

Oh, and be prepared for a crowd! When I go, which is rare, it is always during the week!
