I am looking for a furniture store that has decent quality at a medium to lower price within 20 miles of galveston. I want the furniture to last, but being that it is a vacation rental house I am not willing to buy really nice furniture. Any sugestions?

I would check the rental return places. In a previous life I used to have to "beef up" model apartments and I would go to these places. You can get really good deals. I had used Cort before, their main clearance center was on Kempwood, but they have a store I think in Clear Lake. If you see a piece you like the looks of, but that particular one is too worn, ask them and they can find you one in better shape. I have bought a couple of pieces myself over the years and it actually held up pretty well. When ever they change designs/lines then whatever comes back in from rental goes straight to the clearance center since they no longer carry it even if it is in absolutely perfect shape. Sometimes the furniture did nothing but sit in a vacant model apartment or model home, or a barely used corporate unit. So occassionally you can get stuff really cheap that looks totally new.

The other option is estate sales. I know of three going on on the 10th in Glenbrook Valley. You can always pick up lots of stuff cheap at those. One on Santa Elena, one on Glencrest and one on Glenaire.

Try craigslist.

Try Hilton Furniture - they may start out higher but you can negotiate them down, my neighbors furnished their entire home with Hilton.

We bought a recliner (Franklin) at Star Furniture in Galveston. It's not the chain store "Star" but a small, independenly owned place on Broadway that has been there for 60 years or so. This is a middle-grade store from what I could tell - recliners were about $300 on the low end. Zero sales pressure. If you want to pick up the furniture yourself, you can follow them to their warehouse close to Harborside.

If you want cheap, middling to fair quality, and not having to drive a long way I would recommend Welcome to IKEA.com
