Hi frnds.

Would be moving wt family to Houston soon, most likely Sugarland.I have kids aged 2 & 8.
Can u tell me which are the best elementary schools in Sugarland( Ford Bend District)?? Have checked up on greatschools & saw many elementary schools wt Exemplary rating in zip 77479. But they dont have a Blue Ribbon status. Am confused- is Blue Ribbon status a better quality indicator or Exemplary status??
Which elementary school would u guys recommend???

The Blue ribbon award is a national recognition for schools, but.... you have to be nominated and I don't know that all schools are nominated even if they are high performing schools. Blue ribbon schools, btw, don't have to be high performing, they can be *improving* especially if they have at risk demographics.

Blue Ribbon Schools Program

Quote:
The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students. The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.
Nomination:

Quote:
Eligibility for Public Schools: the Secretary of Education invites each Chief State School Officer (CSSO), including the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), to nominate those schools that meet the criteria for recognition. In submitting nominated schools, the CSSO of each state, BIA or DoDEA must certify that the nominated schools meet the minimum requirements established by the Department and describe any other criteria used by the state to nominate the schools. States must rely on their state assessment systems to identify schools for submission to the Secretary. The nomination criteria, including assessments, must pertain equally to all schools nominated from the individual state.
edited to add - I would not be worried about any of the schools in Sugarland. I think they are all good schools.

Agree... like has been said before, it's more like which elementary school in Sugar Land *isn't* good. You can't go wrong with any really. The Pecan Grove area of Richmond is good too. Now, Missouri City and Stafford are a different story.

Be careful with Missouri City. They are promoting good schools especially in Sienna Plantation to lure people to buy homes. This is not the case. With the new rule now, you do not have to send your student to the school you are zoned to in Fort Bend.

We currently take advantage of this policy, but it does not mean that you can send your child to any school in the district that you want. There is an open enrollment application period for district residents where students may apply for open seats in the schools where these are available. You can find general information regarding intra-district transfers here. Acceptance is not automatic and, in capped buildings like Clements, the option is not available at all. Spring Branch ISD runs a similar program, but most grade levels at the most desirable schools (except Stratford HS) are completely capped out.

Under these policies, transportation to distant schools is generally not included. With the threatened closure of buildings like Colony Bend and one of the high schools in FBISD, plus the resulting rezoning, the number of open seats in the most desirable schools is likely to drop dramatically as school zones are drawn closer to their maximum capacities.

Schools inside Sienna are already overcrowded. I dont think there are open seats for students outside the zone.

The majority of Sugar Land elementary schools are rated exemplary except for 2 or 3. Many of the schools are overcrowded over 650 students. A possible closure is coming for Colony Bend because 400 students is considered a low enrollment. Please understand exemplary means 99% of the students have passed the state test not national test. Texas educational standards are very low compared to the rest of the country, but passing a minimal basic skills test does not mean much when you look at will your child be prepared for college. You may want to look into doing school tours to get information about each school because you may find some schools are doing more than others in academics.

Type in Fort Bend ISD in your search engine. There should a link for school transfers. If you have trouble post back on here.

You are correct about Colony Bend. Parents are protesting it. J are you in Missouri City?
