Only in America is this holiday called "Chinese" new year. In all the other countries where it is celebrated, it's called new year (except with a different name than the new year that occurs on Jan 1).

not true. it's called Chinese New Year in Singapore and in Malaysia and Indonesia (mainly due to the large but not majority Chinese population).

Lunar New Year refers to the beginning of the year in several calendars. Sometimes it falls on Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year festival begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th day. It is celebrated in territories with significant Chinese populations. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors and countries who they dealt with back in ancient time.
