I live in Charlotte, NC and am looking at coming in April for Final Four Weekend. The big question is where to stay?
1- I dont want to spend more than $100 a night
2- I dont want to rent a car, so a hotel close to rail is ideal
3- I need a hotel that will shuttle to and from the airport. I assume I will fly into Bush from Charlotte
4- I want to stay in a safe area
Any other advice about this trip is welcome. I have never been to TX and really need some direction/advice.

In order....

1) $100 Might be tough. Weekend hotels are generally pretty cheap, except when there's events of this magnitude going on. If you can stretch it to $130 or so, you'll probably have a lot more options. Think about the $$ you're saving with no rental car & the cheap rail ticket to the stadium.
2) You'll have better luck taking the express Metro Bus from the airport to downtown (about $5), and finding a hotel downtown, than with a hotel shuttle.
3) see 1 & 2. Your best bet will be downtown and midtown.
4) What's your definition of "safe"? Unless you're staying at the worst of the worst, I wouldn't worry about anything getting stolen out of your room; if you're just worried about getting mugged or something, downtown Houston is pretty safe, and police presence will probably be beefed up over the weekend. There's no such thing as a sure thing, but if you're aware of your surroundings, etc. you should be fine anywhere in the downtown area.
5) If you're a Duke fan, please sell me your tickets when you lose in the regionals

Also, be adivsed the light rail is great for getting down to the stadium, but the line is hellacious after the games when 40,000 people try to get on it at once. Be prepared to wait it out, or find some tailgaters doing an after-party to hang out with for a while.

Would the Best Western at Medical Center be a good choice? It says it at the Metro Rail. I hear that leaving Reliant by car, cab, or rail is a nightmare. Is there enough stuff around Best Western where I wouldnt need a rental car to get around that weekend? I also want to avoid calling cabs all the time.

meh.. kind of no-man's land over there. Nothing's terribly far in any direction, but it's all a little too far to walk (except for the zoo and Hermann park). You'd be pretty reliant on cabs and the light rail for everything, unless your idea of a good time is touring hospitals. I'd either get a place closer to the stadium, so you could walk to/from there (but with slim pickings for dining & entertainment), or stay downtown with all the options you want for the weekend (but with the enormous hassle of return trip on the rail)

Whenever a 'big' event come to town the hotels will have higher rates. Same thing in every city. I would stay downtown and take the Metrorail to/from the event. Your going to pay more than $100/night for lodging.

No hotel that is on the metrorail shuttles to/from either airport for free that I am aware of. Your cheapest method would be to catch the metrobus that goes from IAH to downtown and staying at one of the hotels downtown.

On the other hand, there are hotels all around houston for less than $50/night if you want to rent a car. Probably come out the same and you could go where you want.

You are going to have to relax on one or more of those parameters, you and 50,000 people are coming to town.

Reliant holds a whole lot more people than Toyota.

I had no idea Toyota only held about 18,000. But I guess it makes sense. Watching a basketball game is more enjoyable in a smaller venue so that even in the nose bleeds you can still see what's going on without having to watch a screen.
