Hello all. I'm contemplating making a move to Houston in the near future and would like to be in a relatively urban area with apartments that have affordable rents (no higher than $700/mo for a 1BR) and that's a few blocks away at most from the light rail line. Do any such areas exist in Houston? Thanks.

the area around the Wheeler station on the lightrail is sure to be affordable. kind of ghetto, but i've never had any problems in that area, night or day.

OK, is there anything non-ghetto, but not necessarily upscale (expensive) either? Something kind of middle-of-the-road?

Your best bet would be the area within the Reliant area, but that area will exceed your price range, but not considerably.

There are some older, but nice, apartments in the Museum District/Rice University area (Montrose and Bissonet) around that price range. They are just a few blocks from the light rail. This is a very nice, very convenient area to both downtown and the Medical Center. I don't know where these apartments are advertised; your best bet is probably to drive around that area looking for vacancy signs if you are interested.

I rent a 1 BR w/central A/C (important here in Houston) for $645 and live about ~0.6 miles from light rail station, bus station right outside of complex. It's doable, but you may have to compromise on distance from rail.

A location doesn't have to be right on the rail line. I could settle for a couple of blocks away. I know that some older apartments have deals and I wouldn't be opposed to those. Thanks for the help guys.

Palmetto Guy,
You really should take a look at Midtown Houston. It's close to the two largest employment centers in Houston Texas Medical Center and downtown Houston. There is plenty of arts and entertainment within walking distance too.
The apartments range from $500 to $2,500 and you can search for one using a free online apartment search that offers apts with discounts, rebates and free moves.
