You need to tell us which part of NYC you want to compare with Houston. The tax rates in New York City are very unusual. They have divided the city into four classifications of property, each of which is taxed at a different rate. From what I can tell, this rate contains all the various taxes (city, county, schools etc). This is somewhat different from the rest of New York, which has a tax system more like what we have in Texas (layers of taxes seperately assessed by various entities).

Keep in mind... our rates are pretty high, but the final figure is pretty comparable to other large cities (in that they pay a lower percentage on a higher value)

It's important to point out that while Harris County has higher property taxes, the cost of homes are very low, when comparing to other large cities. So are we just comparing percentages or are we comparing comparable homes (i.e a 2500 sq.ft home to a 2500sq.ft home?). I bet if we just went by sq. ft, Houston is going to be cheaper.

I was thinking the same thing. Median home price where I came from ( Boston ) is over 300K....I'd like to say even higher than that. In NYC it's 450-500k. We haven't mentioned San Fran and other places.

To many varaibles with a big one being pay. Isn't it hard to not make 6 figures in NY? My wife had a friend who started out as a secretary and was making 50k, STARTING OUT.

Also keep in mind that you will more than likely have a MUD tax added on to your property taxes in the Houston area, most folks either seem to forget about it or like to mislead one into thinking it's cheaper than it really is.

So buying a home in Houston, though cheaper than in chicago or nyc, will be about the same price (all other things being equal) cause of the taxes?
