I'm visiting some family in what appears to be a suburb near Sam Houston tollway and 290. I'm coming from downtown Austin. Google maps is suggesting I take I 10. I've heard stories of course of Houston's infamous traffic of course and was just wondering if 290 straight from Austin is a better option?

Any opinions are appreciated

I would just take 290 unless your coming during rush hour.

Even if it's rush hour, heading in on 290 is not bad in the afternoon. I used to make that drive every 2 weeks for almost a year before I moved to Houston.

If you are driving in the morning, just make sure you hit the outskirts of Houston after 9am.

Just did the drive from Austin, and meandered a bit to see some other places as tourists (La Grange, etc.) and found cutting down 77 or 71 to I-10 really not necessary if I was going straight home (about where you are headed) - just take the 290 in.

If your destination is near 290 & the Tollway, you should come in 290 from Austin. It's a straight shot, and the only slowdown will be a few traffic lights in some of the smaller cities (Giddings, Brenham, etc). During morning rush hour, 290 inbound is a PITA (say 7-9am). The rest of the time, it's not bad.

Good luck!

I've ALWAYS wanted to do this but never have had the time. All of those little towns have so much history.

I may be a little geeky but I have always wanted to see the Wendish museum and maybe even some of those painted churches.

290 is an EASY drive in from Austin.

Oh, me too! We did not get the Wendish museum, and in the meanderings, came across Round Top. It seems they are restoring bunches of older German and Czech homes from around the area. We loved it!

La Grange is a classic Texas town.

Now if you meander even more north, Granbury is well done as a great place to visit, along with Glen Rose, where the dinosaur tracks are (and a nice town square as well.)

We stopped off to look around Bellville. I do think they are poising that area for commute-ability to Houston. The two-lane highway to Sealy is being expanded into a 4 lane.

Oh - Winedale ( a tiny hamlet just west of Round Top) has a log cabin church in Gothic style.
