Hey fellow board members,

I'm having a new home built and we are in the stage of picking out items. House comes standard with gas cooktop and electric oven. I'm debating whether to stick with the standard electric one, possibly make sure it's convection equipped. Or should I dish out extra money to have the gas line plumbed for 195$ and then 800$ for a gas oven.

I've been doing research and can't find any solid #'s to convince me that one is more beneficial than the other. I'm mainly looking to pick the cheaper one in terms of monthly costs.

My wife doesn't bake much. Mostly during holidays is when it would probably see activity. But that doesn't mean the use won't change at any given time.

Any tips/suggestions, please let me know.

I know gas ovens still use some electricity if they have a electric ignite r. I know they are also prone to more maint. But i hear they pre heat quicker and cool quicker.

Get a double electric oven. That's what we have. You'll never need 2 ovens at the same time except for that once or twice a year you have a big holiday dinner and you'll be glad you have 2 then.

Gas cooktop and convection electric oven. Electric keeps more even heat, or they used to. Be careful of brands. Some convection oven are better than others. My Jennaire convection was way better that the kitchen aide we put in this house 8 years ago. Also the kitchen aide had many repairs until they finally vented the enclosure. Needed a new circuit board every other time i punched self clean. I cook a lot for crowds. Rarely use the bottom oven, but when you need it, you need it. Great place for storing large skillets.

GE is the brand.

We have an electric/convection oven and to be honest I never use the convection part of it. I would rather have a double oven.

I have to say I don't love my GE but then it's what the builders installed so I am sure it's bottom of the line. I don't think it heats up properly as cupcakes/pizza etc take much longer than a recipe states.

This isn't true in my experience, our gas oven takes longer to pre-heat than our previous electric oven. I like the idea someone else mentioned, go with a gas cooktop and electric oven if you can.

Go with gas. Gas is a lot cheaper to cook with than electric.

You could always just keep the standard and buy a large countertop convection/toaster. Two years ago we had to replace our electric oven with same as the cost to run a gas line was prohibitive. Looks good but has barely been used - too big, gets too hot, wastes electricity. So I bought a small countertop convection/toaster and use it exclusively - it works great, cooks fast and if/when it finally meets its maker, I'm replacing it with a large one.
