I presently live in NW Penna. I am looking to move to Katy Tex, in a few years. I am low income, and handicapped. Is there any housing in this area for me. The most I can afford a month is $250.00 plus utilites. Plus I might have a pet.

Question houston or bust

I am recently separated from my husband of 21 years. I am looking to start over and find myself. I have been drawn to the Houston Texas area I am currently living in NYC loking for the opportunity to relocate to Texas. If there is anyone who can advise on moving to a 3 bedroom apartment for low income families.

We're talking in a few years, ostensibly after gas prices and inflation have gone through the roof?

I really don't know what to tell you. I'm not even sure you'd find anything like that right now, unless you know someone there who has a place for you. Sorry. The only places for $250.00 a month I know of are places that I probably wouldn't recommend. Places that make the Third World not look so bad.

applying for HUD is the only way to find a place to live that cheaply esp. a 3 bedroom apartment (doubt you'd be granted that unless you are moving with several children). you also would not be allowed to have a pet in a home/apt they assist with. of course with housing there are other rules and requirements you must meet

there are families waiting for housing assistance for years. also i believe they still require proof of residency so you'd have to be established here in Houston first.

it is not easy to move to this state with low income unless you have family you can live with first. you can find a home to rent in Katy area for around $500-$600 bucks

Default apply for section 8

If you are looking to move in a few years then now would be the time to apply for section 8 housing. It will take a few years of being on the waiting list to get a voucher. Then once you have a voucher you can move wherver you want to. I think vouchers go up to 1500 a month so you could even live in a semi-upscale area if they will accept your voucher.

However it may be better to go somewhere like Phoenix, Az or Las Vegas, Nv because the rental market is not as tight there and the rent is actually lower. The waiting list is probably shorter as well. Also they may be more fit for a handicapped person especially if you are in a wheelchair. You see in Houston the sidewalks are not very good for whelchairs. Many of the sidewalks are uneven, bumpy and have lifted up over the years this makes it almost impossible for anyione in a wheelchair to use them. It is actuallty even difficult just to walk on them unless the sidewalk is fairly new.

I find it funny that you don't see the normal Katy folks on here pumping Katy as the place for the OP to move to lol, FYI plenty of Low Income apartments around the Katy area.

Yep. Low income housing is in all areas, including The Woodlands where I live.
