Actually, I've asked why people call it ugly. I've seen pictures of the ugliness that really seemed pretty; from what I've seen those "ugly" areas look like the "ugly" areas I see in other cities. Besides, I don't even have the audacity to call Houston ugly or dirty because I've never been there.

Agreed. I have visitors here from numerous other cities and they all seem to really like the looks of Houston. The weather and traffic being the exceptions, if they come here in the summer of course.

Drive up and down I45, you'll see some serious eye-sores, not to mention parts of 59 and I10.

While other cities might have ugly portions, Houston tends to let it show out in the open, and the truly "beautiful" places are usually man made without much natural scenery.

Haha I realized that as soon as I wrote it, but my point was that these man-made beauties are usually used to bring out the natural beauty of a certain area. They add to the view and create some interesting contrast.

I just think that the "pretty" parts of Houston tend to be made by developers looking to make money.

Cities were built for convenience. All the really successful cities were built in convenient locations and the natural looking aspects enhanced. London, Paris, NY, Toronto, and many other really successful cities have nothing naturally pretty about them, people just like taking cheap shots at Houston

There are virtually hundreds of streets in Houston that look like that. I hate it when even residents tell people that Houston is ugly. The city is not set directly on the water, or nestled in between mountains, but it is also not ugly. There are empty areas and deserted buildings along highways and stuff, but to label the entire city based on that. I don't know if it is because I hardly use 45, but I see beauty everywhere I turn in Houston.

Downtown is cleaner than most downtowns I have been in and it is surrounded by nice parks. Hermann and Memorial Parks along with Discovery Green are gems right in the middle of the city.

Houston's highways are cleaner than most and a great number of them look fairly new.

There are trees all over Houston. The buildings in Houston are rather pretty.

sure someone can dig up a picture of a decaying building in Houston but they can do the same for any city. the point is the city as a whole is not like that and residents should not encourage that nonsense
