Anywhere in the southeast is going to have hot/humid summers and most people can't afford to live right on ocean to get the breeze. Most people do get used to it. If you're not at the pool, you usually just plan outdoor activities in mornings and evenings for the 3 really hot months when it gets into the 90's most days. The upside is that you will most likely make us for the outside time lost in the summer by being outside in the winter more. On a typical December Saturday, it's about 50 degrees for a high, sunny, and a slight breeze. You'll see the sidewalks and nature trails full of walkers, runners, people on bikes, babystrollers...bundled a little, but comfortable. There are not that many days in the northeast where you can do that.
Is this referring to The Woodlands in the Houston area? Just wondering b/c of the reference to "Lifetime Fitness across 92".....

Just to clarify, there are 13 community pools, most of which include a baby pool, well as pools at most fitness centers (YMCA, Villa Sport, etc). There are also several splash pads (2 new ones this summer). There is definitely no shortage of water activities available for all ages. However, as someone already mentioned, by August most pools (community and residential) are pretty bath-like....still good for the kids but not as refreshing. The pools with dynamic water features (i.e. play structures, fountains) tend to stay cooler as the water moves more.

As for covered patios, you could certainly add if you choose a home that doesn't already have one, but if your back yard faces west and gets a lot of sun in the afternoons you'll want to add some fans and maybe some kind of shade option. We have a covered/screened patio, west-facing, and use it year round....just about every single day.

We love living in The Woodlands - have been here for just over 12 years, lived in two villages. I was really surprised at the statement about a "lack of covered patios." I believe everone in our neighborhood now (Tupelo Woods in Creekside) and the neighborhood we moved from (Wooded Brook in Alden Bridge) has a covered patio. We have friends in other villages and - I'm really trying to think here - I honestly can't come up with a single one that does not have a covered patio. Hmmm...

Anyway, the neighborhood pools are wonderful and much more than just plain swimming pools.
