We've kind of adopted our widowed neighbor. She's in her mid-30's and her hubby died unexpectedly. She's a peach.

Anyway, one of her A/C units went on the Fritz and I got a frantic call from her because she was leaving for vacation the next day. A well known HVAC company (think: "..call [fill in the blank], get more...." and they told her $400 to check for a freon leak and could be up to $800 to fix. I told her to hang on, go on vacation and I'd get her a second opinion.

Okay, so she's off on vacation and I call one of my sporting clays buddies who has his own HVAC co. He comes out, checks the charge (tiny bit low) then washes the coils and she's good to go. He didn't even want to charge me, but I forced his regular 1 hour call fee and paid him $200.

Really hacks me off when these dudes try to take advantage. Same thing with auto mechanics. I have a mom'npop shop I send friends too and they always come away happy.

As a side note, go wash your A/C coils. My buddy says it's so dry and dusty that everyone should be doing that like NOW.

Just sayin'...

Ronnie

+1

When our a/c went out I looked up our recent neighbourhood newsletter as it is often full of recommendations. I called a neighbour who runs his own a/c company here in Pearland, he came out first thing on a Sunday morning and my a/c was fixed within the hour - $65.

I recommended him to a friend who had been told she needed a new unit - his verdict was that it did not need replacing just new filters

It's great when you find a trustworthy tradesman and it must pay off long term as I am happy to recommend them to friends. It's just finding them that is hard.

It is nice to here about people/businesses that don't overcharge for services.

The problem is most of the time you only hear about the bad.
The old saying is 1 happy customer will tell one person and 1 unhappy customer will tell 20 people.

We need to reverse that saying.

So when you discover a great business, SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOF TOP.

Agree whole-heartedly!!!! Yes, shout it out as often as you can. The fair, reasonable and honest businesses are too few and far between. How refreshing to hear of a business that isn't out to rip off the customers!!!!

No kidding, share the wealth!

Unfortunately, we had to replace the entire unit this past weekend. I'm not sure it was maintained the best by previous owners (so yes, clean the coils, have pressure checked, etc). We knew it wasn't working right when we moved in. Thankfully covered by home warranty but it was a hot few days.

I would LOVE to know a good a/c company. I just moved in a house that needs the a/c to be looked at.

Dude! Husband passed in November 2009. I catch your drift, but no impropriety here.
