I'm not sure a rail would be used much either. People want to drive to work. And the nature of suburban living makes it difficult to imagine driving miles to a rail station to get on a train.

But you're right, HOV lanes are a waste of concrete. All that cement being used for the HOV lane (behavioral modification, actually) would be better utilized as an additional northbound/southbound lane.

Just think how much that would alleviate traffic!

But no, the greenies want us to carpool...
If you think one lane will make a significant difference in traffic, then you do not understand traffic movement and transportation at all. Just as those lanes are added, they fill up.

That one lane can be made into 2 lanes. One for each direction. If you think one lane either way won't make a difference then you don't understand traffic movement and transportation at all.

Do you honestly think one lane is going to make a big difference? Seriously? There is a thing called a point of diminishing returns. Adding more lanes is just that. Unless the added lanes are express lanes where you can only exit for the Beltway, 610, and Downtown (similar to the 401 in Toronto), then maybe it would work. But four or five lane freeways each way is wide enough. After that, you add in HOV/HOT/transit lines to relieve traffic.
