Considering retiring to a rural setting southeast of Houston. How is the Brazoria, Sweeny, West Columbia area?

Rural, yep! I live in Surfside, work with a lot of people from Brazoria, Sweeny and West Columbia. Nice place to settle. Housing / cost of living is a little higher than Houston because most of us work in chemical plants so there's a pretty good income base here. Of course, depends on where you are coming from - if you're not from Texas the cost of living will seem cheap to you. There isn't much to do in those three areas except hunt and fish and West columbia does have a golf course. We go out to eat a lot around here - because there is nothing else to do! If you like the beach, you will be very close if you move to Brazoria County. Of course, that also means you will need to be prepared to evacuate once in a while, but that is just part of life down here. Feel free to Direct Message me if you have any questions.

West Columbia is excellent. Look into Austin and Waller Counties as well.
