In light of Bank of America charging people to use a debit card (starting next year) I am considering switching to a local credit union.
My only concern is I like the services provided by BoA (fraud detector and refunds for fraudulent charges, plenty of ATMs, online billpay, etc) and would want the same in a credit union.
My must haves for a credit union would include:

- Online banking with billpay
- Free ATM withdrawals
- Decent interest rate on checking and saving accounts
- Plenty of locations to make check deposits (preferably close to home and/or work)
- Having brick and mortar locations everywhere is not very important to me
- Mobile app would be a plus, but not required.

So what credit unions around town would best suit my needs?

Does Texas Dow Employees Credit Union have anything near you? I use them - they aren't specifically for Dow employees.

Online banking with billpay
- Free ATM withdrawals

That's doeable.
- Decent interest rate on checking and saving accounts

If you get more the 10 basis points, I'll eat my hat. If it's more than that, then the Credit Union has funding problems.

- Plenty of locations to make check deposits (preferably close to home and/or work)

If "Plenty" is the operative word, forget it.

- Having brick and mortar locations everywhere is not very important to me

Good, because you won't get that.

- Mobile app would be a plus, but not required.

No clue on this one.

Shop around on your own. As you can see from the lack of responses, not very many folks use them.

Ronnie

I use Peoples Trust and Im satisfied. I would never use a regular bank, especially now they're talking about charging you a montly fee to use your debit card(which is all I use).

We use a credit union in Seattle and have lived in Houston for seven years now. No problems being 3K miles away with online banking and shared branching. Many (most?) credit unions participate in shared branching so you can do your brick-and-mortar banking (deposits etc.) at the credit union closest to you, whether or not you are a member. We use SACU locally.

We are happy credit union members and would recommend them to others.

Hey RVD, it's John from your neighborhood.

I would try Member's Choice CU. They have a branch on S. Fry and Katy Gaston
about 3 miles from WLN. I've been a member there almost 3 yrs, and have been
happy with the service. Online Billpay works well and is free. They have several
branches in Katy, and are an offshoot from Conoco Phillips CU which has been
around many years. The website is :
https://www.mccu.com/

Good luck.

Good luck.
That was one of the credit unions I looked at while doing a bit of research.
Do they have free ATM withdrawals? (so I can withdraw from any ATM without a fee)
How about a mobile app?
I didn't see either item mentioned on the website.
Thanks.

We recently dropped Chase in favor of Capital One and have been pretty happy. I know it's not a credit union, but it's not BofA either....

Yes, the withdrawals are free. I believe they will refund any ATM fees
from other banks/CU's. They also have 'shared branching' with other
CU's in the area; further expanding their network. I have not seen a
mobile app, but check with their customer service. I would expect
only the Big nationwide banks to have that (Wells, Citi, Chase, etc).
I hope this helps.
