My must haves for a credit union would include:

- Online banking with billpay
- Free ATM withdrawals
- Decent interest rate on checking and saving accounts
- Plenty of locations to make check deposits (preferably close to home and/or work)
- Having brick and mortar locations everywhere is not very important to me
- Mobile app would be a plus, but not required.

So what credit unions around town would best suit my needs?

Wow, some people need to get with the times. My two coworkers asked about this concerning BofRAPE last week...it is nice "banking" where the circus is NOT run by stockholders looking to make a buck off of the lowlies, but getting a dividend on my stash every month.

I direct deposit my checks, so ATM deposit is of no concern. Everything else you mention is provided.

I use Johnson Space Center FCU and Houston FCU (little more centrally located than JSC). If you end up Brazoria County way, Chocolate Bayou FCU is out there. I need to close that account one of these days...

I switched from BoA to First Community CU a month ago and have not been happier.

Online banking. Bill pay. Mobile app. Interest on savings AND checking. No ATM fees for foreign ATMs. Plenty of locations in the Houston area (IMO). I do use direct deposit from my job though, so I don't really care about branch locations.

Never been happier.

Thanks for all the info, people. I am so angry at Chase right now that I won't go into a branch because I'd probably get myself arrested. As soon as I sort out the enormous mess I'm in with them, I am OUT of there... $%#*-ing criminals is what they are. I will be looking into the credit unions you all suggested.

I have heard a lot of good things from Chase Banking, but because they screwed a friend over her mortgage in Florida (like many other people) I decided not to sponsor their business. I'm also shopping to get out of BoA. I have pretty good APR on BoA credit card, will probably keep but checking/savings will be moving elsewhere.

Anyone has had experience with Encore Bank or Prosperity Bank?

I'm curious what most think is a good rate. I've been with my credit union for 17 years and my no-fee credit card APR is the prime rate + 6.5%, currently 9.75% before the 1% rebate for all purchases. I don't really pay much attention to interest rates since we rarely carry a balance, but I always presumed that the credit union rates were lower than the major for-profit banks paying upper management tens of millions of dollars... Where does that money come from?
