I currently live in Louisiana (my home state) and thinking of moving to Houston to pursue an IT career. After doing research, I've noticed that Houston is HUGE and I have no clue where to live. I will be living alone so I would like to live in a neighborhood that is affordable and safe. What are some neighborhoods/areas that are great for young professionals?

Thanks!

What city are you from?
What type of neighborhood do you want?
What's your price range?

Software Developer (.Net)

I'm from Baton Rouge
I want a neighborhood that's safe, is close to an area where I can jog, and close to businesses (jobs/shopping/restaurants). I want to live where there's many other young professionals.
Price Range: No more than $800/month for a 1 bedroom apartment.

There's a lot of great IT employers stretching from the Galleria area and Westward of that (out to the Beltway). I know that .Net is pretty hot right now and for the Houston area, demands around 75-105k if on the application development side. With that in mind, you will be able to choose between pretty much every rental property in the area (there are some apartments that are ludicrous though...). I think the Galleria area would be your best bet. Lot's of young successful people in the area, and a lot of IT employers are nearby.

Hey, I'm from Baton Rouge too.

If you want a neighborhood where you can jog the costs for a decent apartment will go up. If you want to be close to an area so you can drive to a park you will have better luck. The Memorial Park area is nice and there are people jogging all the time. You're best bet is Herman Park area or maybe Rice Village.

I personally wouldn't recommend Uptown, there isn't a place to jog unless you go to Memorial Park from Post Oak.

$800/month max is a bit low. Those apartments are usually in sketchy areas. The rental market is very strong in the Houston area. Many professionals are moving to Houston from worst job markets.

As a .Net developer, you can easily afford double or triple the rent in Houston. Nice safe apartments close to Memorial Park or Herman Park will cost at least $1200/month.

Generally, you want to stay west of 45 north freeway/288 south freeway that splits the inner loop in half. The area to the east is very sketchy. You will also want to avoid the Medical district and Reliant Stadium. The area borders some sketchy neighborhoods by 288/610. Texans game night creates traffic gridlock on the surface roads.

Your best bet uptown/gallaria area.

There is nothing wrong with the Medical Center.
