Hi,
I'm a single 24 y/o male moving to the Houston area. I'll be working in The Woodlands, but it seems like it's your typical suburb for families, not young people. I'd like to live walking distance to restaraunts, pubs, etc... Is the commute from Midtown to The Woodlands worth it?

Well at least you'd be going against traffic both ways -- but it is still a long drive.

For me, no.

My last job, I worked in The Woodlands and lived near the Galleria. It was a 55 minute drive up in the morning... 20 minutes of that was just getting TO the freeway, the other 35 was on the freeway. The way home was often longer, again because of the terrible 610 and Galleria traffic. It was about 40 miles each way for me.

I commute from SE Houston to Port Arthur 5 days a week. It's worth it to me. If you have enough incentive, Midtown to Woodlands will be too. Remember you have the Hardy Toll Rd in case of any hiccups on 45.

It's better than doing it the other way, but it can still be less than fun.

You'll be hoping there's not a wreck on southbound 45. You wouldn't believe it, but Houston freeway drivers tend to act like they've never seen a traffic accident before.

I must live in my own little bubble world here. I really thought Museum District to FM 1960 was hell on earth... I can't imagine some of the daily commutes you people do.

tstone, when you say "incentive" do you mean of the six figures variety?

It's not. That's something like purgatory on Earth. Sort of like Dallas. Museum District to The Woodlands is hell. Or no - The Woodlands to the Museum District is true hell.

I don't even like driving around up there, no matter how far I came in from. I park at the mall and hoof it to the pavilion for the show, then go back and GTFO.

Hell on earth would be why I moved to The Woodlands after 6 months, and when I moved again, I just moved to Cypresswood so I could save 100 bucks a month in rent.

I really hate commuting.

If you cannot afford the condo in the Town Center, then you be the judge. It is definitely a daily trip and you are limited in time to do the walking! BTW - there are a number of young people living here. It is not all that big. A ride 10 minutes to Town Center, or take a bike there. You will spend a lot more time commuting than going to the Town Center to eat, pub hop or whatever if you lived here.

Yep- and then some, base. Maybe not so great if you're more advanced in this career but I only have only 3 years of experience in this stuff, no kids (yet). So it's a 2 yr stint or so, then I'll be back in Uptown provided this bubble doesn't burst by then. (If it does, I will have the option to chill for quite some time.)

Anyway, my ride is 90 miles one way, 75 minutes in the morning and 80 in the evening (with my trusty Valentine One). That timing sounds like Downtown to Katy or Galleria to Woodlands... or a casual commute in Los Angeles. Really not that bad because there are no usual traffic hangups.
