You know, a lot of people from out in the hoods take the bus out to the Galleria to break in cars, houses, etc. Or at least that's what I have been told. Dont qoute me on that. The first time I went to the Galleria I got into it with a group of young thugs in the garage.

I guess you can say "at least it's not Alief/Sharpstown/Gunspoint".

Are "most" of the restaurants around the Galleria really chains? Many little places are buried in strip malls and overlooked while driving, exactly the same way many suburbs are incorrectly stereotyped. Also depends on where you think the boundaries of Uptown really are.
Yeah but what kind of crimes? Are we talking car break ins and petty theft, or Murders, rape, and armed robberies. Because those are the types of crimes I worry about. Looking at the map what do they define as "the greater uptown area" beacuse some parts of uptown border Gulfton which isn't exactly river oaks.

I know what you mean as far as borders go. It's mostly theft & burglary in Uptown but there is some robbery & assault. The same could be said for any of those beats in the top 10. I guess you'll have to crunch some numbers and figure out proportions, also adjust for total population. Eyeballing it, they all look about the same to me. I work in Uptown and almost everyone is on guard on the street and in dark parking areas for a reason, especially this time of year.

You want to live in Uptown, not the Galleria area. There's quite a difference.

I've heard people argue that the Galleria area extends all the way to Fondren.

I won't jump to conclusions but as far as I know there is nothing offically called "The Galleria Area." People use Galleria in place for Uptown.

Galleria area, Uptown all means the same thing to me. 59-610-Woodway-Chimney Rock with a loose definition extending a little past those bounds.

On houstoncrimemaps, they use police beats to aggregate crime data. So "Greater" uptown district is loosely defined and includes 77057 and probably part of Gulfton, though I can't remember. As far as I know, Uptown/Galleria is strictly 77056 (As other mentioned -610 west to Chimney Rock and north of 59) so more accurate to look at
Houston Crime Maps | ZIP Code | 77056

I've always felt very safe there, but like anywhere, need to use common sense and don't do things like leave valuables in plain sight. These days, breakins occur even in the richest of neighborhoods. Check at the above link to see how often your apartment shows up in the crim report and talk to local tenants. Some apts are bad, no doubt, but overall, galleria is safe.
