I don't think you will see any type of skyline like what Chicago did.
*edit* ok just looked, while most of those buildings in DTLA are midrises, there are some smaller highrises like a 300-400 foot building scattered around. That could work for Midtown along with the midrise apartments.
well what I was thinking was 15-30 mid rise buildings, but apparently they are not cost effective.

land in midtown ran at 4 bucks a square ft back in the 90's. By 2006 it was over $50.

town homes they said cost $17 bucks a sq ft to build and give a return on the investment right away.

housing over 5 stories cost over $115 bucks a square feet and take longer giving a profit.

compounding the problem is Houston requires parking spaces per unit while other cities require 1 or less. Having multiple floors of parking costs money but doesn't give anything back.

so for the foreseeable future midtown will only be townhouses, CVS pharmacies and car shops.

Ouch. That does suck. Like in that like I posted on the last page. They want the area to become urban but they don't know what urban is. They allowed a suburban CVS to go in right by an urban complex.

Not mention [as I've said many times] the horrible sidewalks.

Some (15-20) highrises along Main, yes. An entire new section of buildings that mimic the feel and density of both TMC and downtown, don't see it.
Are we talking about in our lifetime?
It could happen but I don't think so. I think Galveston would have a skyline before TMC and downtown are connected by highrises.

That again is the city. Developers have to seek a variance to accommodate all the outdoor space, which includes parking (that the city requires, plus outdoor space and wide sidewalks. The city often denies the variance so what happens is the developers scrap the outdoor space living narrow walks for pedestrian.

Well, how about making the area into an entertainment district with many nightclubs, lounges, bars, retail shops, and restaurants?

we are connecting a skyline not having a feel.

not even in Manhattan is the feel uniform. The entire stretch of land is about 5 miles. where do you see 5 miles of land with the same feel all over?

How many of those areas will Houston have?!
Some will slowly decline and the new spot will be elswhere, midtown and downtown would be cool.

Gotcha. Houston can give tax incentives and TIFs for buildings over a certain height or a certain square footage confined to that strip but it would have to be beneficial to the city financially as they could care less if the skyline is connected.

Y'all said that y'all don't have a "signature" nightlife district like The Strip, Times Square, etc. It would be nice for a southern city to have a hip and a happening downtown/midtown.
