AT&T pretty much owns the market here. There are many DSL providers, but they all lease from AT&T.

Comcast is the cable provider.

We use Comcast for our phone, internet, cable & security system. It's nice to get all four on one bill. Not sure how they compare cost-wise with other providers. ~K~

Check broadbandreports.com (dslreports) and look for ISP's in the area of interest. Under no circumstances are you required to use 'the only phone company in town'. You may choose a cable provider or if you choose to use that copper pair called a 'phone line' you can choose an ISP that provides service over a 'dry loop', that is, no dial tone from the phone company. Should an ISP do that for you then they will probably offer VoIP as well. I've done this with Speakeasy in Dallas with Covad providing the 'dry loop' (they actually lease the line from ATT and charge the ISP who in turn charges me).

Or you can get internet and VoIP from a cable provider.

Disclaimer: for those with Verizon's FiOS... they are not required to 'line share' the fiber optic service with other providers. A large reason they push the FiOS service. The above is not a choice.

I use AT&T phone & DSL, which used to be SBC, a.k.a. Southwestern Bell. I got a 1 year $19.99/mo cheapie deal for DSL. You get what you pay for. It drops every so often, especially around 5-6pm on weekdays. But it is otherwise fast and reliable enough. I wouldn't use it for VOIP, though.

AT&T U-Verse has a good deal (but currently no VOIP)...so you could go with Vonage.

Comcast has a good deal with their Triple Play (Digital Cable, Phone, High Speed Internet) for $99/month

If you live in the Clear Lake area, you can get Verizon's Fios service which is Digital Fiber.

I've had AT&T (formerly SBC formerly Southwestern Bell Telephone Company) DSL since the mid-90's; I buy their fastest service (because I like it). Still works (and continued working after the hurricane).

I use Comcast for phone, internet and cable but not for my security system. (For that, I use ADT.) As often as Comcast service is out in my area (2-3 hours several times a week and often a full day or longer), why would anyone use it for a security system?????????
