Hello all,

I have just relocated to Spring, Houston for work and having spent 4 hours in the DMV and now I have a practical driving test in a few weeks.....

I have passed the written.....

Just want the honest opinion on here of other relocaters about the test....

I know the parallel parking is the first bit....what to expect.....?

I have read so many different views I am overwhelmed by the whole thing.

I have been driving here for years on and off with no incidents....and all the time since Jan and have a clean 23 year uk and international licence.

How strict are they etc etc......

Cant believe I have moved here to take on a massive new role with a $20 million dollar budget and I am nervous over a bloody driving test when I drive here all the time!

Any calming thoughts would be great!

Ditto. If 16 yr old kids here can easily pass, it will be a piece of cake for you. Use your signals, check your mirrors every few seconds, and don't exceeed the speed limit. It will be over in less than 10 min. Just remember to stay on the correct side of the street!

Good luck!

Thanks for replies......

I am so used to driving here now it's going to be fun when I go back to the UK......that's when I will need to think about which side to be on......so into the zone of driving in Houston now everything is going to look so small when I go back.....

Really appreciate the positive comments.....

Default Parallel?

Do they still require parallel parking skills? I thought they did away with it. It shows you how long I've had mine! BTW, I'm sure you will do just fine.

I've heard some don't have to do it. My daughter had to a year ago. We practiced the night before, and there were a half dozen others jockeying around in the DPS parking lot taking turns parking.

Compared to the driving test in the UK this one really is a piece of cake! Not all drivers have to do parallel parking, when I did my one 11 years ago the lady asked me to drive past the parking bays and I had to reverse down a street for a distance instead. She said that they get 'Bored' of parallel parking every day and that many new drivers cannot reverse in a straight line for more than one vehicle length lol

Here's the trick. If you can't parallel park worth a hoot, take a really small vehicle for the test. For my kids, we used a Jeep Wrangler. EZ Pleazy.

If you can't parallel park a Mini Cooper, VW Bug or a small Jeep, then you don't deserve to drive.
